STEM in the Area
2017 is the 34th year for the MATHCOUNTS program on a school, local, state, and national level. MATHCOUNTS was created by a group of national entities, led by the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE). Here in Ohio, the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) and its Engineers Foundation of Ohio (EFO) are in charge. Locally, the Akron District Society of Professional Engineers (ADSPE), an ACESS member society, is the host. Now also including the sixth grade, but still targeted at seventh and eighth grade students, the goal of MATHCOUNTS is to increase the level of mathematics achievement and prestige among students, in anticipation that they will select and prepare themselves for future careers in science and engineering. Teachers and students start preparing at the beginning of the school year, culminating in each school selecting its team of four for the February Akron area local contest, comprised of teams from schools in Medina, Portage, and Summit counties. In addition to, or instead of, the team of four, a school may now also send four individuals to this competition. It involves one-half-day written and oral, individual and team, tests. The local contest is hosted by The University of Akron, generally on the first Saturday in February. The top two teams and top four individuals (not on those top two teams) from the local MATHCOUNTS contest are invited to participate in the state contest in March in Columbus, Ohio. The top four individuals in Ohio form an Ohio team that proceeds on to the May national competition, the site of which changes annually. Go to to find out more. Locally, contact Brent C. Sisler, P.E., at or 330/836-9238.
The Mission of ACESS is to enhance the technical environment in the Akron area through coordination and cooperation with the technical societies, industry and academia.
ACESS provides broad industrial and academic representation and a widely diversified science and technology source.  Detached from special interest groups, it offers an excellent opportunity for effective informative public service.
