Programs

ACESS cooperates with member professional societies and with local industry and educational institutions to promote programs designed to enhance education in science and engineering. Our goal is to support the development of the next generation of scientists and engineers and especially to promote access to these careers by members of underrepresented groups. Celebration of STEM

To serve our community, member societies, and scholars, the ACESS Event Committee had a new event in 2023 – “Celebration of STEM” on March 30, 2023. Our goal for this Event was to “Encourage scholars to expand their understanding of STEM as part of their lives”.

Scholarships

Two $1,500 scholarships given annually, one to a student at Kent State University and one to a student at The University of Akron. To be eligible for these awards the students must be juniors or seniors working toward a four-year degree that is related to one of the disciplines represented by an ACESS member society.

Teacher Grants

ACESS has sponsored Annual Honors and Awards Banquets since 1948 to bring together member societies of ACESS, to recognize outstanding technical talent and to strengthen ties among the members of ACESS, the academic world and distinguished leaders of local industry.

Science Fair Prizes

Each year, ACESS provides $100 prizes at two local science fairs: The Akron Public Schools Science, Technology, Engineering and Math EXPO and the Western Reserve District 5 Science Day. For each event, ACESS provides two prizes, one for the best Middle School project and one for the best High School project. Click the link below for a listing of current and previous winners.

Distinguished Award of Council and ACESS Award

The Distinguished Award of Council is presented annually to an outstanding citizen or organization for their technical and managerial achievements and involvement in civic activities. The ACESS Award is presented annually to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the Akron Council of Engineering & Scientific Societies (ACESS).

Banquet

ACESS has sponsored Annual Honors and Awards Banquets since 1948 to bring together member societies of ACESS, to recognize outstanding technical talent and to strengthen ties among the members of ACESS, the academic world and distinguished leaders of local industry. The Honors and Awards Banquet provides a joint forum to recognize outstanding science and mathematics students, to present sponsored scholarships and awards, to recognize the Distinguished Service and ACESS Awards.

Due to the restrictions on attendance and the continued cautions for COVID-19, the ACESS Honors & Awards Banquet was not held on November 5, 2020 or November 4, 2021 at Guy’s Party Center. In 2019, the ACESS Honors & Awards Banquet was held on November 3, 2019 at Guy’s Party Center. The 2019 ACESS Honors & Awards Banquet Brochure outlined the program events.
